In commercial hybrid seed production, maintaining genetic purity is vital to crop performance. The primary method for validating genetic purity and certifying compliance is the Grow-Out Test (GOT).

1. Purpose of Grow-Out Tests

While laboratory analysis (such as electrophoresis or molecular marker tests) provides speed, GOT is the ultimate field test. It is used to identify off-types, pollen shedders, and self-pollinated seeds under natural growing conditions.

2. Sampling & Plot Layout

GOT requires representative samples from each seed lot. The samples are grown in replication plots alongside control samples of the parental lines. Proper isolation distances, row lengths, and population densities must be maintained to ensure trial validity.

3. Evaluation & Rouging

Observations are recorded at critical physiological stages—specifically during seedling, vegetative, flowering, and maturity phases. A certified seed inspector evaluates morphologic markers (stem color, leaf shape, height, flowering date) to calculate off-type percentages.
